This webinar is for East Maui farmers and food entrepreneurs and the economic and agricultural organizations that are working to innovate new avenues of operation for local food production.


Hana Food Launch Tasting Event Challenge

We are excited to extend this opportunity to the food entrepreneurs of East Maui! Work with our team of educators and support agencies to take your agricultural innovations to the next level!

The MFIC Hāna Roadshow team will do FREE assessments and provide a Farm/Product report for up to 10 applicants, and extend an invitation to a Hāna Food Launch Tasting Event; with the Top 3 submissions being selected to receive educational or certification support and awards, and an invitation to participate within the August 8th webinar event.

Get your submission in early! We are limiting registration to 10 applicants for this first time event!

Applicants will receive:

  • A Product Report that includes guidance and direction from our team, providing recommendations for:
    • Educational opportunities
    • Necessary certifications around safe food handling (DOH Green Placard), and business and tax guidelines
    • Distribution channels and product and business scalability insight
  • FREE Assessment Event Tuesday August 4 at 5pm via Zoom: A sensory evaluation of product concepts for all applicants.
  • Top 3 applicants (of 10 max) will be recipients of supplemental support for classes at the University of Hawai‘i and/or business coaching dependent upon the applicant’s need.

Please know that the information we obtain from you will be held in strictest confidence. We understand that your recipes are proprietary.

To enter:

  1. Please fill in the online application. You can also download a LINKED APPLICATION for a reference, which includes sensory evaluation form example.
  2. Contact with any questions, and return submissions via email to Gary Albitz at Maui College – albitzg@hawaii.edu / (808) 281-9672, no later than Monday, July 27, 2020. You will need to reach out to Gary at this email to send any additional images, logos, labels, etc.
  3. We will cover your costs for a sampling of 12 samples of your product to be used as part of the sensory evaluation. These will need to be ready to be picked up the morning of Monday August 3, for delivery to the panelists and the tasting event for the applicant group – scheduled for Tuesday, August 4 at 5pm via Zoom. (We will send you a link with confirmation of you successful application.)

DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS IS MONDAY, JULY 27, 2020.

Applicants will get a confirmation of receipt when their submissions are accepted, and the reports on your products will be returned by Tuesday, August 4, with selected Top 3 nominees contacted to extend award offer and event information. As part of your participation UHMC MFIC will be hosting an Online (via Zoom) Hāna Food Launch Tasting Event Tuesday, August 4 at 5PM. We will send the invite once applications are received. Mahalo!
